Lemon Rice

Lemon rice is one the most iconic and flavorful dishes from south India which can be served with Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner.
It is also known with the name Chitranna or Nimbehannu Chitranna.
Lemon rice or Chitranna has a yellow color that comes turmeric. The main seasoning ingredients are mustard seeds, fried lentils, peanuts, curry leaves, chilies, lemon juice.
Garlic and Onions are optional for the recipe but can be added for more flavors. Lemon rice or Chitranna is very popular in the South Indian state of Karnataka.


  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 1 Tsp mustard seeds
  • 8-10 Curry leaves
  • 1 Green chilli
  • 1/2 Tbsp urad dal(black gram)
  • 1/2 Tbsp channa dal
  • 1 Tbsp peanuts
  • 4-5 Dry red chillies
  • 1 Tsp Turmeric (Haldi)
  • 1 Bowl steamed rice
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice


  • Add 2 tbsp oil in a pan.
  • Once the oil is heated add mustard seeds in it.
  • When the mustard seeds crackled then add green chilli and curry leaves in it.
  • Saute it for a minute then add peanuts in it.
  • At this point add turmeric in it and saute it for half a minute.
  • Now add steamed rice in it and mix well.
  • Add salt and lemon juice in it.
  • And mix well and lemon rice is ready.
